Sage Energy Corp.
Sage Energy Corp. has been selected by both Frick Gas Compressors
and GE Gas Compressors as an official
distributor for their products.
Frick Gas Compressors manufactures
rotary screw gas compressors. Until
granting Sage Energy distributor status,
Frick compressors were only available
from one distributor in all of Western
Canada. Now, Sage Energy can offer this
line of gas compressors to its clientele.
Similarly, GE Gas Compressors, previ-
ously known under the brand name
Gemini, has awarded OEM status to Sage
Energy Corp. GE offers a complete line of
reciprocating gas compressors specifically
suited for natural gas boosting. As a result
of this addition to its product offerings,
Sage Energy can now provide a more
complete range of compressor solutions
to its clients. Headquartered in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada, Sage Energy offers
clients a complete range of products, in-
cluding rotary screw and reciprocating
gas compressor packages, natural gas
generators and refrigeration compression.
data on the rotor and digitizing it before transmission, the AT-5000 system
maintains high data integrity and
noise immunity. The crystal-con-trolled system requires no tuning, and
a high sample rate (up to 11,718 samples per second) makes it possible to
capture data from highly dynamic
phenomena.
About five hours were required to
install the strain gauges to the 6. 5 in.
(165.1 mm) shaft and connect the rest
of the telemetry system. AP Dynamics
then ran the package for about two
hours at five different speeds between
900 and 1000 rpm to observe the differences in the vibratory torque relative to speed. At certain critical
speeds, torsional resonances in the rotor system were present, causing high
levels of torsional vibration.
With the telemetry gear providing a
simple method of retrieving strain
gauge-based torque signals from the
rotating shaft, AP Dynamics was able
to confirm that the gas producer
needed to make similar modifications
to all five other compressors. The producer also needed to identify safe operating modes that would allow the
producer to avoid potentially catastrophic torsional vibration in the future. The total cost of doing this was a
small fraction of one day’s lost revenue caused by unplanned downtime.
The bottom line is that torsional vibration is often overlooked. Vibration
studies are left until there is a critical
need to set things right, often driven
by a failure. Prudent companies, who
want to maintain uptime, would do
well to perform a vibration study,
with real-world vibration measurements, upon installation. They also
need to repeat field vibration measurements at routine maintenance and
whenever operating parameters
change significantly. ;
