POWER TO MOVE THE WORLD
Hyundai Ideal Electric Co. Provides Custom-Designed
Motors, Generators and Switchgear

Hyundai Ideal Electric Co. (HIEC)
has been working with customers since
1903 to provide electrical power equipment designed to meet special needs.
HIEC generators can be found on all
types of prime movers in installations
throughout the world. Its motors are in
use driving virtually every type of
equipment in such diverse industries as
oil and gas, petrochemical, paper, automotive, mining and pharmaceuticals.
“But we have done more than just
supply equipment. We have developed a reputation for quality, versatility and flexibility,” said Nick Smollen,
sales director. “Our market niche necessitated the development of an engineering staff capable of designing
and building products to suit the
needs of an industry that is diversified
and always seeking better performance. Our product line now includes
all types of industrial switchgear, controls and rotating electrical equipment,” he explained.
Ideal Electric began in a small
Mansfield, Ohio, U.S.A., facility manu-
facturing split frame motors for street-
cars. After World War I, Ideal pioneered
a large, slow-speed synchronous mo-
tor and generator and a poly-phase
capacitor induction motor. In the
1950s, Ideal Electric led the move to
brushless excitation of synchronous
machines. It also developed both syn-
chronous and induction motors for
use with variable frequency drives. In
2007, the company was purchased by
Hyundai Heavy Industries of Ulsan,
South Korea, now operating as
Hyundai Ideal Electric Co.
