Voith said a survey taken in early 2013 indicates that he operational availability of its variable-speed plan- etary gearbox Vorecon was 99.98% with a mean time
between failures (MTBF) of 48 years.
A total of 201 Vorecon gearboxes — including model
years 1987 to 2010 — rated at up to 41,500 hp ( 31 MW)
were subjected to reliability testing.
Voith reported that, when compared with previous test-
ing from 2005, the statistical overall operating time of the
variable-speed planetary gearbox increased by a factor of
almost four, from 2,095,921 hours to 8,065,000 operating
hours. Hence the statistical availability estimate of 99.98%.
Voith said the reliability of drive components is an important factor when calculating the life-cycle costs of a system. It
said not only does the high reliability of the Vorecon gearbox
decrease drive system downtimes, it also reduces the associated operating costs.
Vorecon controls the speed of pumps, compressors and
fans and is most often used in the oil and gas industry as well
as in thermal power plants.
